PHETSTA TALKS BAD ROBOT, WRESTLING & NICKELBACK
We sat down with Perth Drum & Bass DJ, producer and internet personality Phetsta and asked him some hard hitting questions about his favourite wrestling hero, meeting Rregula and his love for Chad Kroeger.
1. So tonight yourself and Zombie Cats will be going b2b at the opening night of Sessions, for those unaware this isn’t the first time you and Rregula have come together, tell us a little bit about the early days and Bad Robot?
Ross and I met at a now demolished (literally, it’s an apartment block or something now) D&B night called Drum Club 13 years ago or so. Through mutual friends we found we had similar taste in D&B. We decided to get together and write some weird offbeat, cinematic, sci fi neurofunk. As a piss take of all of the tacky futuristic producer names we named ourselves Bad Robot.
Drum & Bass guys tend to act pretty serious, even more so around the time we started out. We took music production very seriously but not much else. So we utilised the power of plastic swords and cardboard armour when we DJ’d. That’s how I got into touring regularly, and playing alongside Ross was always really good because he was a much better DJ than I was at the time (I was terrible, in all honesty). He’d always make sure we pushed the antics and DJ skills to the limit, while we both did the same for the health canada pharmacy production. They were good times, there’s nothing like two buoys who enjoy nothing but a little rough and tumble as well as adult horseplay.
After doing that for a few years I started releasing my solo stuff as Phetsta on Technique, which is where most people know me from.
2. Who is your all-time favourite WWE wrestler and why?
I don’t watch that fake crap and anyone who does is an idiot. If I did it would be Triple H. Why? Because he’s the real life CEO of the company but also finds time to be a fun loving teenager and a barbarian king.
3. Would you rather only be able to listen to Nickelback songs OR reread all 56 pages of iTunes terms & conditions, every day for the rest of your life?
Nickelback, of course. If people think Universus was a great album they should listen to Nickelback to find out what real music is. My only gripe is that Kroeger and Avril Lavigne have broken up and he cut his cool hair off. It reminded me of Triple H’s.
4. Who are some locals that are absolutely killing it right now and who are some guys to definitely look out for in the future?
Ekko & Sidetrack have stepped up their production game big time. Their recent stuff on Viper is wicked and getting international support. We had a little listening party a few weeks back and their new stuff is insane.
Flowidus are definitely two dudes to look out for having just signed to Ram, which would be a dream of any up and coming producer. I’d heard both guys work previously over the years so it’s good to see new guys break through.
Catch Phetsta tonight at Sessions b2b with Zombie Cats, alongside Flowidus and a bunch of local legends.
