The single release will coincide with a national tour in April/May. We managed to catch him for a moment to answer a few of our questions.

Here at Inhibit HQ, we’ve sat down and had a listen to you new ‘City Lock EP’ and we can say it’s massive! How do you feel about the EP and what were some of your favourite aspects of putting it together?

Thanks! I feel good about the new EP. It’s the first body of work I’ve written/produced/mixed in the my new studio so that was really enjoyable. It’s always a bit sketchy doing mixdowns for the first time in a new room, just because you’re still learning the sound of the room and how things should be sounding in it. But after many late nights and countless hours, I think I got shit popping mix wise on these new songs. Since releasing Universus back in 1976, I’ve been very conscious of not repeating myself both in terms of song writing and production/mixdowns. I wanted the next body of work I did to be be sonically and stylistically different and more evolved from anything I’d released previously. It was like Universus was a very large part of my life, and I’m proud of it, but that’s done now, lets move on, let’s start again. And by start again I really mean start again, going back and creating new drum sounds, new patches, getting rid of old templates, not just use the same drums kits I built over the years. Obviously this takes a long time, but it kind of had to happen. Post Universus I actually tried writing using the same sounds and patches and templates I used on Universus, but I found myself hating everything I wrote and not being inspired at all, which makes complete sense considering I’d been listening to the same snare sounds for the last 4 years, that shit is not going to inspire you.Having that album out of my system felt like a fresh slate and I guess this EP is the result of that.

As many people know, you’re quite The Simpsons fan. What would have to be your all time favourite episode?

This is an impossible question *thinking music*…….ok I’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes trying to pick a favourite and I can’t, but two perfectly cromulent episodes for me are ‘A Milhouse divided’ and ‘You only move twice’

You’ve just built your studio, and I’ve gotta say, it’s pretty ballin’. What’s your favourite piece of gear currently installed and what are you looking to get next?

Thanks, I’m pretty stoked on it. Kudos has to go to my dad, my uncle Harvey and my cousin Munroe for deciphering the super complex design and build plans and then building the thing and blowing my mind with how they insanely awesome they made it and pretty much exceeding all my expectations as to how rad it would be, and also Kudos to mum for managing the project and keeping everything moving along and budgets in check (as much as possible). My favourite piece of gear right now is my new TK audio BC501 buss compressor. *NB non audio nerds can skips to question 4 about now.* This thing is based on the SSL G compressor but to me actually sounds better, and has more functionally. IE total harmonic distortion, 3 different side chain filters and the all important wet/dry knob, making parallel comp’ing super easy. Not sure whats next on the list, I’ve been eyeing off both the Moog Sub37 and/or the Dave Smith Prophet 08/12 for a while now, so they might be the next addition..

When you aren’t making Bangers and ‘Good Dubstep’ with Phetsta, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Most of my time outside the studio is spent playing basketball, or watching NBA league pass, or watching the simpsons or hanging out with my girlfriend or spending too much money on those cold press fruit juices they have in the jars at freshies. When I feel like being a jerk and punishing myself I will go to the gym and lift heavy things or push other heavy things around and then inevitably white out and almost vomit, always a good time. I also enjoy spending too much money on fancy beer, wine or whiskey and then be a wanker and say words like ‘peatiness’, ‘IBU’, ‘northern hemisphere hops’ or ‘This wine is fairly woody on the palette with hints of cocoa and grapefruit’ or ‘do you have any buttery, wooded chardonnay’s?’ or ‘We should probably open it now and rest the tannins before drinking it’

What sounds and styles are influencing your production at the moment? What artists are you really digging right now?

I’m really enjoying dubstep again to be honest. A lot of the stuff coming out of the disciple camp I’m vibing on. Also really liking a lot of 128bpm stuff too. There is so much variation and originality coming at that tempo recently, there’s the whole bass house thing which I really enjoy, but fear is becoming homogenised really fast… but then out of that is a whole bunch of other music that doesn’t really have a name tied to it (yet) I kind of feel like a lot of people (myself included) are making some kind of breaks, but we just arent calling it that because apparently some dickhead decided that was a dirty word about 7 years ago… anyway, a lot of cool broken beat hybrid breaks/miami bass/house what ever the fuck you want to call it, I like that. On the drum and bass side of things, I’m really enjoying the darker tech side of things again. The sound has started referencing the drum and bass I fell in love with 15 years ago, with a modern twist, which I love. However I would love to see some more rules being broken and producers pushing the envelope a bit more in  drum and bass, theres a shit tonne of clone drum and bass out there and it’s treat with ativan depressing to me. But that being said there is also a shit tonne of rad drum and bass being made and that’s what I aspire to do and that’s what I’ll be repping in my sets, amongst other rad music at other tempos in other genres, but the common thread will always be ‘115% radness’

What can expect to see from Shockone in the near future?

You can expect a lot of varied music from me, again the common thread will be trying to make it 115% rad. I’ve got several remixes for certain lords on the go and about a gajillion collaborations with other lords I need to finish and they’re all at different tempos and are over the place stylistically but I’m really happy and proud of how they’re all sounding.
